'Interactivity' Digital Media . Tv- 'The new internet?'
Interactivity is now widespread across all forms of media allowing faster more efficient methods of communication. With digital tv set to be the only form of television, interactive services are becoming more involved in our viewing. It appears the new generations desire more control in television entertainment as digital emerges. Sky Interactive is a prime example allowing viewers to interact in several ways. In Health and lifestyle viewers who may be parents can actually message a midwife through Sky television for any tips and advice they require. Viewers can shop for thousands of products and holidays, they are able to gamble , participate in live game shows and competitions, play games and much more through Sky Interactive. This can also be applied to gaming on 'Xbox Live' where gamers can play eachother whilst speaking to eachother on a headset by connecting their console to the internet.Xbox Live also contains chatrooms forums and many other forms allowing interaction. Furthermore, it appears naive to only primarily link the internet to interactivity when in fact many forms of media and technology are containing interactive functions through different mediums like digital.
'New media' - Progression or Regression ?
The common perception of the advancement in media encourages the idea of society developing its strengths and awareness of technology, assuming this is in fact a key advantage in our methods of communication and entertainment. With this being said it can be argued that with the current focus on further developing more efficient and beneficial forms of media, is society taking a step backwards as we lose touch with our spirituality, morality and natural surroundings or is the expansion of media rather helping these subjects by giving more people acsess to information which could be vital in their self development ? Lister had commented that by labelling the subject 'new media' it implies that the new forms of media are in fact better. Is the rapid advancement in media and technology evidence that society today desires more with less patience at hand as we lose touch with subjects which should be more appreciated ?
